A Controversial Courtroom Apology

During a hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judgeopenly criticized the conditions Allen faced in custody—going so far as to apologize directly to him.

The judge described the treatment as “extremely disturbing,” highlighting that Allen had been placed under strict suicide watch immediately after his arrest.

This included:

  • Confinement in a padded cell
  • Constant lighting
  • Repeated strip searches
  • Use of physical restraints

In court, Faruqui suggested these measures may have been excessive, especially given that Allen had no prior criminal record and medical evaluations reportedly found no clear suicide risk.
