Tragedy in Detroit: The body of a 3-year-old boy is found in the freezer of his home. The mother is charged with murder, and the case has shocked the community.
When police in Detroit, Michigan, visited a family on welfare, they made a horrifying discovery: the body of their three-year-old son was in a freezer in the basement of the home.
The mother has already been charged with the murder of her son, writes the British newspaper Metro.
After the horrific find, more details about the family's circumstances became known:
It is said that the little boy was born blind and is dependent on his mother for everything.
But apparently she was overwhelmed with it.
When the authorities came to check on the family, it wasn't their first visit.
During the home visit, they inspected the exterior of the apartment and checked the freezer in the basement.
There they made a terrible discovery.
The 3-year-old boy lay frozen and dead in the freezer.
Shortly after, the mother was arrested and now faces charges of murder and child abuse.
“The tragedy is too much for the family to bear,” a family member told Local 4 News. “Not just for the family, but for the friends, the neighbors, for everyone who knew them.
A neighbor also spoke of the sadness and tragedy that shook the entire area.
"I just wish I could have done more. I wish I could have saved him," she said.
Several other children were reportedly found at the mother's home and taken to a local hospital for examination, police said.
"Our children remain at risk – not only from gun violence, but also from a killer who may be living in the home with them," Prosecutor Kim Worthy said in a statement.
It is unclear how long the boy's body had been in the basement of the house or how he died. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
