I bought corn from a very ordinary grocery store on my way home. Nothing unusual — neat cobs, green leaves, a normal price. I was even happy: children adore corn, for them it is almost a holiday, especially when it is hot, juicy, with a drop of butter.
At home, I started cleaning the ears. I removed the first layer of leaves, then the second — and at one point my hand froze. There was something strange inside the corn. Dark, gray-black, moist, as if alive. It didn't look like spoiled grain, nor like dirt.
A wave of disgust and anxiety washed over me at the same time. I looked at it and didn't understand what it was or how it could have gotten inside.
I didn't touch it with my hands. I carefully set the cob aside and then checked the rest. Several of the corns were the same. At that moment, the decision came instantly: I threw it all away. Without hesitation, without "what if it could be cleaned." I simply couldn't take any chances when it came to the children.
And when I later found out what was actually inside the corn, I was just shocked 😲 Where are the sellers even looking? I told the details in the first comment 👇👇
Later, after I calmed down a bit, I started looking for information. And what I learned really scared me. It turned out that it was a fungus - corn root rot.
It develops inside the cob and can look exactly like this: a black, slimy mass hidden under perfectly normal kernels. The scariest thing is that from the outside, the corn can look perfectly fresh.
I sat in the kitchen and thought, I could just not notice. Boil it. Serve it to the kids. We would eat this without suspecting anything. The thought made me cold.
Luckily, I saw it in time. Since then, I've been checking products much more carefully, and I know one thing for sure: if something looks strange, it's better to throw it away without regret. Sometimes, this can save a life.
