We all do stupid things when we're kids. Ultimately, growing up means learning to say no to what seems dangerous.
Unfortunately, children are susceptible to peer pressure, and even the brightest young people can be pressured and persuaded to participate in stunts that end in disaster.
Just ask the parents of 11-year-old Tyler Broome, who suffered horrific injuries after attempting a crazy YouTube challenge known as the "Carousel of Death."
Yes, the name itself says it all, but for Tyler it wasn't so much a dangerous trick as an attempt to show his friends how brave he was.
The 11-year-old boy suffered injuries similar to those experienced by fighter pilots after exposure to extremely high gravitational forces (G).
The madness he participated in, known as the "Carousel of Death," consists of participants sitting in the middle of a playground carousel while the rear wheel of a motorcycle spins it at high speed.
Tyler was found unconscious next to the carousel shortly after the accident. He is believed to have suffered brain damage and vision problems.
Exceptional strength
It is believed that he was subjected to gravitational forces that are normally experienced only by pilots and astronauts.
According to sources, Tyler was at a local park with a friend when they were approached by a group of older teenagers who encouraged them to join in the game.
Terrible tragedy on a playground
"I don't recognize my child - he's on the verge of a stroke. Tyler was sitting on the merry-go-round, and the boy who approached him was about 17 years old. "Tyler doesn't know him, they're not friends," said his mother Dawn, quoted by the British newspaper The Independent.
"He put his wheel on the ground and started spinning at such speed. When everyone stopped, the group just walked away - it's absurd."
Dawn said that the hospital staff had never seen such injuries and had to conduct an investigation before starting her son's treatment.
"The injuries were so severe that he looked like the Elephant Man. They had never seen anything like it and they will be preparing a medical report."
"His head was completely swollen, his blood vessels were burst, his eyes were glazed over. His vision was blurry. You can manage with a broken arm, but this? He doesn't remember anything, he doesn't remember any details."
Parents, please remember that children tend to try things that we adults would avoid, especially on playgrounds.
Our thoughts and prayers are with young Tyler and his family. Please share this story to spread awareness about this extremely dangerous game.
