For decades, visitors walked past this painting without ever noticing this detail. A classic, elegant, almost ordinary family portrait. The painting, which at first appeared to depict a respectable and elegant family, actually told a much more complex story about the society of the time and the social realities of that period.
Why hadn't anyone noticed before?
The question many people asked afterwards was simple: how come no one noticed this detail earlier?
