The Gold Star tradition has its origins in one of the most difficult periods of modern history—World War I—when families across the United States sought ways to honor loved ones serving overseas. During this time, Robert L. Queisser introduced what became known as the Blue Star Service Banner. Displayed in a home’s window, each blue star represented a family member actively serving in the military, offering a quiet but powerful symbol of pride, duty, and national commitmentAs the war continued, these banners became a common sight across the country. Entire neighborhoods displayed them, creating a shared visual language of service and sacrifice. However, when a service member lost their life, the blue star was replaced with a gold one. This transformation changed the banner’s meaning entirely. What had once represented hope and service became a solemn symbol of loss, remembrance, and honor.
