Extraordinary: Footballer killed at his mother's funeral Check the first comment 👇

Former Corsican separatist leader and president of French football club Ajaccio, Alain Orsoni, was shot dead at his mother's funeral in the village of Vero, located about 30 km east of Ajaccio, the capital of the Mediterranean French island of Corsica, Reuters reported, citing the Corsican prosecutor's office.

The businessman "was hit from a long distance," said prosecutor Nicola Septe.

Corsican police have confirmed the death of the 71-year-old separatist who led the so-called Corsican Self-Determination Movement, which French police say was a front for its armed wing, the Corsican National Liberation Front-Traditional Wing.

Authorities have linked the movement's armed wing to a series of attacks on the island of Corsica in the 1990s, some of which the group has officially claimed responsibility for.

Orsoni was convicted and later pardoned in connection with a machine gun attack on the Iranian embassy in Paris in 1980.

He also held the position of president of the Corsican football club Ajaccio in the years before and after 2010.
